Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium myrtillus—Two Species—One Used as a Functional Food

Vaccinium uliginosum L. (commonly known as bog bilberry) and myrtillus are species of the genus (family Ericaceae). The red–purple–blue coloration blueberries is attributed largely to anthocyanins found in bilberries. Anthocyanins, for their potent biological activity antioxidants, have a significant involvement prophylaxis cancer or other diseases, including those metabolic origin. Bilberry most important economically wild berry Northern Europe, it also extensively used juice food production. A review latest literature was performed assess composition V. myrtillus. Clinical studies confirm benefits supplementation part healthy diet. Because antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, apoptosis-reducing activity, both bilberries can be interchangeably dietary supplement with anti-free radical actions prevention diseases cataracts, component sunscreen preparations.
